This shouldn't be hard and if you can't tell I question everything about you.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Yes, black roof is gone. I like it.

Goo Gone is my best friend now. The dip was put on so thin it was impossible to just peel. Goo Gone and a plastic scraper made quick and easy work of it.

Now we have stuff for when we do the wheels and actually paint them black. Awesome.

Very nice, although I will admit that I liked the black roof.

Also, is the Safari gone yet?

I hate your very existence for owning a BMW that I like. That brand is the enemy of everything I hold dear. But I like yours.

I kinda liked the black roof too, but I like the silver a bit more.

Not yet! Still sitting in front of the house collecting dust.

It is. It's like someone saying "I don't like the genre of music your band plays, but your song has been stuck in my head."

My feelings about BMW are complicated, since I live in Connecticut and they're like the default carmaker for like everyone in my immediate area. I love their cars from the Neue Klasse era up to the 80s, when they became more about selling badges to the well-to-do and unimaginative and less about selling cars where you paid slightly more for an improved driving experience instead of impressing people at your local golf course.

I like how your car is a recollection of what they used to stand for. It reminds me that the spirit of their greatness never totally died.

I have to disagree about your time frame of BMW losing its way. In my opinion the ship began to sink in 2001 with the E65 replacing the E38, and with the subsequent replacing of the E39 and E46 the ship had sunk (The Z4M coupe and the S85 V10 got on the last lifeboat).

I feel that they lost their way in an official capacity back when they decided to start selling cars to people who watched Wall Street when it came out and thought that looked awesome instead of horrifying, but they had this insurgent spirit within them that kicked and spat and finally died a couple years ago after creating the final, ultimate statement on what BMW is at its best, the 1M.

I know I'll get shit for this from "enthusiasts" who like cars but not enough to learn about them and appreciate them on the same level that people appreciate art and will be all BUT THE FRONT PAGE SAID BEIGE RABBLERABBLERABBLE but BMW is the German Toyota. They're both marques who put performance and driving pleasure at the forefront for years (remember, Toyota was building RWD econoboxes up until the mid-80s, spent over 20 years and 3 generations bringing mid-engined, rear-drive sports cars to the masses and assembled a team of the world's greatest and most obsessive engineers, giving them nearly unlimited funds and 10 years to create the halo vehicle for the largest automobile firm in the world, a car that isn't the fastest or the most powerful or the most high-tech or the most luxurious, but a car where every single component is the way it is because it all adds up to one man's vision for the ultimate driver's car), but instead is stuck making boring cars for the boring people who choose their brand.

What breaks my heart is while Akio Toyoda is a consummate Jalop, a guy who spent the 80s racing Hachirokus, who partnered his family company with Subaru to make a car pretty much for himself and himself alone and assigned an engineer who spends his free time kart racing to head up development of a minivan, BMW is drifting around aimlessly, splitting attention between doing the whole "this is what German prestige brands do now, I guess, it doesn't really matter what you buy, they're all the same, just pick a size and if you want a 3-pointed star, 4 rings or a blue and white checkered roundel and kidney grilles" thing and super-advanced efficient plug-in hybrids that are really exciting and interesting on paper until you compare them with pretty much anything else and quickly see how horrendously overpriced they are.

The torch carried by that rebel enthusiast spirit seems to have gone out in Munich. A perfect example of this is the current M5. Everything about it, on a technical level, is exciting and awesome, but when faced with the reality that turbocharged engines are more quiet than naturally aspirated ones, what did they do? Did they add a bit of pipe from the airbox to the cabin to amplify the natural sound of the engine to provide auditory entertainment to the discerning driver who can appreciate the joy that comes from hearing the song played by a high-performance engine, like Ford does in the ST siblings? No, they just had the car's stereo play generic synthesized "V8 engine sound" straight out of a PS1-era Ridge Racer game, a sound that can easily be (and definitely will be) turned off.

I want them to find their way again. I really do. I love currently-produced cars from pretty much every country that produces them, but not Germany. BMW established themselves making exactly what I like. I just hope they can do it again one day.

Sorry for totally derailing your post with this rant. Your car looks great. It really does. More cars need to rock the silver+dark wheel combo, and I can't wait to see them once you paint them fully black. And the aerodynamic mirrors BMW put on the M3 are my favorite sideviews that aren't fender mounted. Also, mad props for rocking the 4-door. Sacrificing practicality for style is not what these cars are about. They should be able to be both useful and exciting, like a hatchless hot hatch.

Good choice. The old way had a distinct unintentional almost landau roof vibe to it.

finally died a couple years ago after creating the final, ultimate statement on what BMW is at its best, the 1M.

Hmmm... Going to politely disagree with you on this mostly because I hate the 1M's engine. I hate it because it is nearly the same as the 335i and not something naturally aspirated and for that reason, despite whatever anybody else says, I will always consider the E86 Z4M coupe the last great BMW.

Kinja'd!!!

Also my apologies to Mr.Logansteno, can't wait for more updates seems like progress is happening quickly!

P.S. Not that many good quality photos of Z4M's when I GIS...surprising
